Rutland Regional Medical Center: Comfort Suites

Rutland, Vermont

Project Type: Healthcare

We’re excited to announce the successful completion of the Rutland Regional Medical Center – Comfort Suites project, a testament to collaborative efforts and community support. As the Construction Manager for this initiative, our team has been privileged to contribute to the transformation of three Palliative Care Comfort Suites on the hospital’s fifth floor.

This achievement wouldn’t have been possible without the remarkable generosity of the community. Through the dedicated “A Journey of Comfort and Support” campaign led by the hospital, over $430,000 was raised, underscoring the community’s commitment to compassionate healthcare.

The renovated Palliative Suites, spanning 722 square feet in total, now stand as a testament to thoughtful design and purposeful construction. These spaces serve as havens, offering solace and support to patients facing serious medical conditions or terminal illnesses, and their families during difficult times.

Our role as Construction Manager involved navigating the intricacies of the project, ensuring that the vision for these suites translated seamlessly into the completed spaces. We’re proud to have been part of a project that goes beyond construction, contributing to the well-being of individuals and families during their most challenging moments.

This accomplishment is a shared success, and we extend our gratitude to the entire community for their support in making these Comfort Suites a reality. It’s a privilege to be involved in projects that have a meaningful and lasting impact on the lives of those we serve.

Rutland Regional Medical Center: Medical Office Building & Loading Dock

Rutland, Vermont

Project Type: Healthcare

The Thomas W. Huebner Medical Office Building and Loading Dock project involved the construction of a two-story MOB building spanning 35,000 square feet. The first floor of the building now houses the Vermont Orthopedic Center and the Physiatry Department, while the second floor accommodates the Ear, Nose, and Throat Department. This consolidation of services allows Rutland Regional Medical Center (RRMC) to bring these specialties onto its main campus, eliminating the need for separate offsite buildings.

In addition to the MOB building, the project also included a two-story addition to the Loading Dock area, covering 6,590 square feet, as well as renovations to 2,180 square feet of the existing Loading Dock and food service area. The first floor of the Loading Dock features new loading dock lifts, trash compactors, compost storage, and a freight elevator. On the second floor, new food service offices and storage space were created to support the kitchen operations.

The construction of the Thomas W. Huebner Medical Office Building and Loading Dock was overseen by H.P. Cummings Construction Company as the Construction Manager. Lavallee Brensinger Architects provided the architectural design, and Rutland Regional Medical Center served as the owner of the project. This collaborative effort resulted in the successful completion of a modern facility that centralizes key medical services and enhances the efficiency and convenience for patients and staff.

Brattleboro Retreat Linden Lodge

Brattleboro, VT

Project Type: Healthcare

HP Cummings converted a portion of an existing building at Brattleboro Retreat into a patient care facility to accommodate the institution’s growing needs. The first floor underwent extensive renovations, with approximately two-thirds of the space receiving upgrades. The exterior was enhanced with new windows and insulation, while the interior saw plaster walls being removed and installing a new mechanical system. A one-story addition was constructed for patient exam rooms, and minor upgrades were made to ensure proper egress throughout the building. A new courtyard was also created for patient use, featuring a retaining wall, perimeter fence, and brick walkways.

Working closely with Brattleboro Retreat’s administration, Lavallee Brensinger developed multiple options for a 12,000 square foot, 12-bed Level 1 Behavioral Health Unit on the existing campus. The selected design focused on wellness, safety, and a strong connection to the outdoors. The historic Linden Lodge, built in the early 1900s, provided an ideal foundation with its large windows and high ceilings. Spaces were designed to incorporate natural light, openness, and features for patient privacy, engagement, education, and individual choice.

The collaborative efforts resulted in a successful project that met the growing needs of Brattleboro Retreat, providing enhanced patient care facilities within a limited timeframe and budget.
