Demolition at Newport Crossing ... See MoreSee Less
Lots of construction progress recently! We hope to have good news to report on the elevator soon. Meanwhile, here's a shot of our new Children's Library coat nook in action!
Here's what we've been up to:
-Restoring the basement after the flood (the water reached 7.5 feet in the basement, and the space essentially needed to be gutted), including new flood-resilient walls and flooring and waterproofing efforts
-Restoring the East Montpelier Room and staff lounge in the basement to their former use
-Preparing to bring back the basement book sale
-Moving many of our mechanical systems up out of the basement, including our air handler units, building controls system, electric panels, network infrastructure, security and fire systems, and more
-Relocating the air handlers requires new duct work throughout the basement and new duct runs from the basement to their new rooftop location. This required eating up some of the space in the elevator lobbies that had previously been used for coat storage, hence the creation of the new coat nook
-Constructing a new elevator mechanical room on the 1st floor and restoring the elevator to working order
-Creating a new phone booth for quick phone conversations or Zoom meetings in the Nonfiction Room
-Dry waterproofing the room containing the remaining mechanical equipment in the basement (primarily our District Heat system)
-Creating two new six-person meeting rooms in former storage spaces in the basement
-Adding air conditioning throughout the entire building to create a more comfortable environment for staff and patrons, to provide air exchange for healthier air, to allow our building to serve as a cooling space during periods of extreme heat, and to protect our collection from humidity
-Related work to the skylight to reduce solar gain and improve lighting
All this in a building originally built in 1895 with two-foot thick exterior walls of granite! This has been a monumental effort, led by our amazing Facilities Coordinator Jason Kass, our architects at GBArchitecture, our contractors H.P. Cummings, structural engineers Dewolfe Engineering Associates, PC, mechanical engineers Slade Engineering, electrical engineers DuBois & King, Inc., and many many local trades. One day this week alone, our contractors were overseeing electricians, masons, waterproofers, carpenters, elevator repairmen, sprinkler repairmen, painters, duct fitters, and concrete cutters.
We are so grateful to hundreds of you for supporting this work, especially The MacLeay Foundation, Vermont Library Association, The Vermont Community Foundation, The WaterWheel Foundation, Senator Patrick Leahy, Vermont Humanities, Vermont Public Library Foundation, Lake Champlain Basin Program, and so many more.
We can't wait to welcome you into our refreshed spaces this spring. Thank you again for all your patience and support! ... See MoreSee Less

🚧 Topping Off Ceremony at Grand Senior Living! 🚧
We celebrated a significant milestone at Grand Senior Living last Tuesday with a topping-off ceremony, marking the placement of the last hip truss at the North building. It was a proud moment for the entire team, including Grand Senior Living, HPC, and our subcontractors. The North building's trusses and sheathing are complete, and we have installed the TPO membrane and roof hatch on the flat roof. We are starting the TPO installation at the first-level terrace this week, along with the hip roof underlayment. The South building's Lobby level wall panels have been delivered, and installation has begun, while structural framing at the Historic building's Lobby level started last week. Our plumbers are working on roof drains, and the installation of exterior window bucks and flashing continues at the North building. Stay tuned for more updates as we continue making strides on this exciting project!
